Elder Care – Fun Hobbies for Seniors

Elder Care – Fun Hobbies for Seniors in Kingwood TX

Your brain needs stimulation to keep it healthy.  This is especially true for aging adults and senior citizens.  Exercising your brain may reduce the risk of developing cognitive impairments for seniors. Research shows that by doing memory and mental exercises, the brain is able to generate new cells even as people age.

There are lots of activities such as hobbies, exercise, and arts and crafts that can challenge the senior’s mind and stimulate their memory. Here are some fun suggestions for seniors to help improve their brain functions:

Gardening – Gardening is enjoyable for many seniors who like being outside. However as people age, they are often plagued with arthritis or aches and pains that may make it difficult to bend and stoop while gardening. An alternative is growing small herbs on a windowsill or near a window. Herbs are fairly easy to grow and can be planted in small pots. Seniors can learn about the different herbs before planting them and then choose from a variety like cilantro, basil, mint, thyme, dill, rosemary, oregano, parsley or lavender. This will also provide fresh flavors to a healthy diet. Herbs are perfect for growing indoors in the winter time.
Growing flowers – Amaryllis bulbs are easy to grow, inexpensive and produce beautiful and tall flowers. They are available in kits and tend to grow quickly. This is a fun activity for seniors to enjoy and can be done inside in pots during cold weather.
Hobbies – There are so many hobbies that seniors can get involved with even if they have limited mobility. It’s never too late to learn something new. Some ideas include creating a recipe book of family recipes, painting, photography, bird watching, traveling, woodworking, scrapbooking, swimming, Bridge, sewing, embroidery or making crafts.
Making centerpieces – Many senior centers have lots of events for seniors and having nice decorations is a good way to lift their spirits and get them in the mood for the festivities.

For help with getting your loved one involved with hobbies, consider hiring elderly home care for your senior parent.
