Changing Sleep Patterns and Caregiver Stress near Kingwood, TX: A Correlation
“One Family Caregiver Feeling Overwhelmed near Kingwood”
During the first couple of weeks that Kelly was stopping by her father’s house to check on him and provide any care he needed, and to make sure things were okay. She was working a full-time job and her father only lived a few miles away from her place of business. It made sense for her to check on him from time to time.
After his heart attack, she vowed to make sure he had everything he needed to be safe at home and maximize his chances of making a full recovery. As the weeks turned into months, Kelly began to feel overwhelmed with all of the obligations she had going on in life.
She didn’t associate the increased level of stress in her life with being a caregiver. She kept thinking that each time she stopped by her father’s house, it was only for short amount of time. After all, she would be able to sit down, have a conversation with him, eat dinner with him from time to time, and that all had to be good, right?
Most of the time, the caregiver is not going to notice the stress that begins to infiltrate their life until they are overwhelmed by anxiety. Kelly noticed these things, but still couldn’t associate them with being a family caregiver. There was more pressure at work, more risk of losing her job due to downsizing, and that was creating stress in its own right, which kept her from seeing the situation clearly.
Eventually Kelly began to notice her sleep patterns changing. She was having more difficulty falling asleep at night, and would wake up several times during the night and be unable to go back to sleep.
There is a direct correlation between stress and sleep habits. The more stress somebody is experiencing, the more difficult it is for him or her to get a comfortable night’s sleep. However, getting sleep is vital to good health, both mental and physical.
The more Kelly struggled with her sleep, the more stress she began to experience as a caregiver as well as with her job and other responsibilities. Her father noticed the change in her behavior and decided to sit down and talk to her about it. He came up with the idea of hiring a home care provider to help out so that she can focus on her job, her relationships, and spend some time doing things that she enjoyed.
Within a few weeks Kelly was sleeping better and feeling refreshed in the morning. Sometimes, caregiver stress can be a direct cause of sleep problems, which can help to exacerbate the stress a person feels.
For any caregiver under stress, consider home care or other options to help the elderly individual and alleviate a significant portion of the stress you feel.
