When Siblings Disagree About Home Care

Houston, TX – When Siblings Disagree About Home Care

Miranda had called her brother Phil because she had noticed their father struggling with doing things around the house. She also had concerns that he might not be bathing on a regular basis.  Surprisingly, Phil dismissed her concerns.  After all, his father was a strong man and had always been independent.  It had been five years since their mother passed away and during that time their father had managed to take care of himself well enough.

As the months progressed, Miranda became more and more concerned about their fathers’ well-being. Phil just didn’t want to listen.  No matter what type of in-home care service she talked about, Phil would just continue to dismiss the notion with comments like, “He’s fine. Don’t worry about him.”

Phil’s denial about their father needing help grew stronger over time.  This eventually led to some intense arguments and, unfortunately, damaged the relationship significantly.

Miranda simply couldn’t understand why her brother was closed to the entire notion of home care. Phil didn’t spend a lot of time visiting with their father, at least not nearly as much as she did, and he never offered any help.   The tension between Miranda and Phil was becoming unbearable, and the entire family was now involved.

Finally, Miranda and Phil’s father called a family meeting. He said, “I’m not as young as I used to be. For the longest time I didn’t want to accept the changes that were going on in my life. I wanted to believe I can still take care of myself. But reality doesn’t lie and I need help.”  The decision was hard for Phil to accept, but he apologized to his sister.  Their father asked the both of them to forgive one another and come together as a family.

When the topic of home care divides a family, it may seem impossible resolve and takes its toll on everyone.  It’s important for everyone involved to stop and take a moment to think about how other people view the situation.
